THP RAMPS UP WEEKEND PATROLS
(AUG 28, 2014)  THE TENNESSEE HIGHWAY PATROL HAS PLANNED A "NO REFUSAL" ENFORCEMENT CAMPAIGN DURING THE LABOR DAY HOLIDAY WEEKEND TO KEEP MOTORISTS SAFE ON STATE ROADWAYS.  THE OFFICIAL HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD BEGINS AT MIDNIGHT FRIDAY AND ENDS AT 11:59 P-M MONDAY.  THE "NO REFUSAL" ENFORCEMENT WILL BE CONDUCTED IN MANY COUNTIES ACROSS THE STATE INCLUDING GILES, MAURY AND WAYNE COUNTIES.  THE PROGRAM AIMS TO DETER IMPAIRED DRIVING AND REDUCE FATAL CRASHES BY ALLOWING LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS TO SEEK SEARCH WARRANTS FOR BLOOD SAMPLES IN CASES INVOLVING SUSPECTED IMPAIRED DRIVING AND SUSPECTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REFUSE THE BLOOD TEST.  DURING THE 2013 LABOR DAY HOLIDAY, 16 PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN 15 FATAL CRASHES ON TENNESSEE ROADWAYS. ALCOHOL WAS INVOLVED IN 6 OF THE FATALITIES AND 60 PERCENT OF VEHICLE OCCUPANTS KILLED WERE NOT WEARING SAFETY RESTRAINTS.  FOUR MOTORCYCLISTS, ONE A-T-V RIDER AND ONE PEDESTRIAN WERE ALSO KILLED.  THE T-H-P WILL CONDUCT SEVERAL DRIVER LICENSE, SEAT BELT AND SOBRIETY CHECKPOINTS THRU-OUT THE WEEKEND.  ON FRIDAY NIGHT, A SOBRIETY CHECKPOINT WILL BE SET UP IN GILES COUNTY ON HIGHWAY 11 AT THE 13 MILE MARKER AND A DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT WILL BE SET UP IN THE AFTERNOON IN MAURY COUNTY ON TOM J. HITCH PARKWAY A HALF MILE SOUTH OF U-S 412.  ON MONDAY EVENING, A DRIVER LICENSE CHECKPOINT WILL BE SET UP IN WAYNE COUNTY ON STATE ROUTE 13 SOUTH AT THE HIGHWAY 64 UNDERPASS.
