Barrett Contests Giles’ District 7 Commission Race
Elected Giles County officials will be sworn in on Friday, August 27 except for 7th district commission winners.  Friday afternoon representatives of candidate William Allen Barrett filed a challenge in Chancery Court in the 7th district commission race claiming that one of the 25 signatures on the qualifying petition of winning candidate Vicky Coleman should be disqualified because the individual no long lived in the 7th district. Circuit Judge Stella Hargrove said that none of the 7th district commission candidates could be sworn in pending a hearing by Judge Robert Jones on September 2nd. State law requires a candidate to have at least 25 eligible signatures from their district on a petition in order to run for office.  Coleman won her seat with 423 votes to Barrett's 254.  All other office winners will be sworn in by Judge Jim Hamilton this Friday morning at 9 at the courthouse.
