City enacts false alarm fine
Lawrenceburg leaders gave the green light to all items of business listed on their Thursday meeting agenda.
Council members approved an ordinance on second and final reading establishing a charge for false emergency alarms. A total of 48 percent of alarms are currently false alarms. For the first false emergency alarm, a notice letter will be sent. For the second, a warning letter will be issued. The third false alarm will result in a $25 fine. The fourth false alarm will result in a $25 fine and the actual cost of the response. The ordinance was approved on first reading in December 2009 but deferred in January.
Fire Chief Don Kelly says due to a relaxation in ISO rating regulations, he has implemented a new procedure that should virtually eliminate false alarm calls and cut overtime in half. The fire department now sends only one fire engine and two firemen when the department receives a fire alarm call. The initial responders will call for help if there is an actual emergency.
The council approved the ordinance which will also benefit the police department.
